This is not your average Apple Cinnamon Bread. Yes, yes, of course there's apples and cinnamon. But to amp up the flavor, I opted to stir thick and clovey apple butter right into the batter and swirl the bread with a sugar mixture combining cinnamon, ginger, clove and nutmeg!
It's a perfect quick bread to help usher in the Fall season... even if it's still 90 degrees outside...

Sugar ‘n’ Spice Apple Bread
Ingredients
For the apple bread
· 3/4 cup sugar
· ½ cup vegetable oil
· 2 eggs
· 1/3 cup milk
· 1 tbsp vanilla extract
· 1 cup apple butter
· 1 ¾ cup flour
· ½ tsp salt
· 1 tsp baking soda
· ½ tsp baking powder
· 1 tsp cinnamon
· 1 granny smith apple, peeled and diced
For the sugar ‘n’ spice swirl
· 1/3 cup brown sugar
· 1 tbsp flour
· 1 tsp cinnamon
· ½ tsp ground ginger
· ¼ tsp ground clove
· ¼ tsp nutmeg
· 2 tbsp butter, melted
Preheat oven to 350F.
For the loaf… Whisk together the sugar, oil, eggs and milk. Stir in the vanilla and apple butter. Sift over the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon. Fold in the apples.
For the sugar ‘n’ spice swirl… combine all the ingredients in a small bowl.
Pour one-third of the batter into a greased 9-by-5-inch loaf pan. Sprinkle about one-third of the sugar ’n’ spice mixture over the batter. Repeat with another third of the batter and spice mixture. Top with the remaining batter. Smooth the surface until the batter is even. Sprinkle over the remaining spice mixture.
Bake for about 80-85 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Allow the loaf to cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before turning out of the pan and onto a wire rack. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.
Serves 8
Notes
For extra crunch, add about ½ cup of finely chopped pecans to the batter.
Gluten Free Friendly!
Substitute the flour for a GF flour blend. I’d recommend Cup4Cup gluten free flour for this recipe.
