A Stromboli is pretty much like a pizza that's been rolled up onto itself. You can stuff it just as you would top a pizza. Sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, you name it. But one fine Friday night, I thought I might take one of my favorite hoagies and stuff it into a stromboli!
A Philly Cheesesteak is basically thinly sliced beef, fried onions and plenty of cheese served up on a soft hoagie roll. And if you're feeling fancy, maybe you throw in some peppers or mushrooms.
This Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli is jam-packed with beef, peppers, onions, and two, count 'em, two different cheeses! I like a combination of provolone for flavor and American for ooey-gooey-ness. Just be sure and crimp those edges as best as possible so you don't end up with cheese all over your oven! You'll thank me later.
Serve thick slices as an entrée or a hearty, hand-held party app! This recipe has "game-watching party" written all over it!
Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli
Ingredients
· 3 tbsp olive oil
· 1 onion, diced
· 1 green pepper, diced
· Worcestershire sauce
· Flour for dusting
· 14-16oz pre-made pizza dough
· 8 slices provolone cheese
· 8 slices American cheese
· 1lb roast beef, sliced thin
· 3 tbsp parmesan cheese
· 1 tsp dried oregano
· 1 tsp garlic powder
· Large pinch of salt
· Marinara sauce, if desired
Place a pizza stone in the oven at 450F for at least 1 hour before baking.
In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp olive oil over medium low heat. Season with 4-6 dashes of Worcestershire sauce. Sautee the onions and peppers until soft – about 5-6 minutes. Set aside.
Line a work surface with a large sheet of parchment paper. Dust the paper with a bit of flour. Using a rolling pin, flatten the pizza dough into a large rectangle about ¼ inch thick.
Shingle the provolone and American cheese in alternating rows across the pizza dough leaving a 1-in border around the dough. Sprinkle the cooked onions and peppers evenly over the cheese. Cover two-thirds of the cheese with the roast beef.
With the widest side of the pizza dough nearest you, continue to roll the dough onto itself tightly. Tuck the roll seam-side down in the middle of the parchment. Crimp either side of the roll to secure the filling.
Brush with the remaining 2 tbsp olive oil. Sprinkle with parmesan, oregano, garlic and salt.
Slide the Stromboli on the parchment paper into the oven onto the pizza stone using a pizza peel or cookie sheet. Immediately reduce the oven temperature to 400F. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Stromboli should sound hollow when tapped.
Remove from the oven, and cool for 5 minutes. Using a serrated knife, slice the Stromboli into 2-3 inch pieces. If desired, serve with hot marinara sauce for dipping.
