This recipe is a mash-up of classic French Onion Soup stacked up on a juicy Burger. With so few ingredients, the key is quality and abundance.
I caramelized a whole onion with a bit of garlic and thyme. Don't be afraid to mound those jammy onions on top of the burgers. Same can be said for the thick slices of nutty gruyere cheese.
Melty cheese pulls, sweet onions, and toasty bread is all too reminiscent of slow-cooked French Onion Soup. And the perfect adornment for a beefy burger!
French Onion Soup Burger
Ingredients
For the caramelized onions
· 2 tbsp butter
· 1 sweet onion, halved and sliced
· 2 garlic cloves, minced
· ¼ tsp salt
· ¼ tsp black pepper
· 3 sprigs fresh thyme
For the burgers
· 2 1/4lb beef patties
· ½ tsp seasoned salt
· 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
· 4 slices gruyere cheese
· Toasted brioche buns
Melt butter in a large skillet. Add onions and garlic. Sweat over low heat. Season with salt and pepper. Add thyme. Sautee until the onions are golden brown – about 15-20 minutes. Add splashes of water if onions begin to stick to the pan or char. Remove the thyme sprigs from the pan and discard. Remove the onions and set aside.
Season the burger patties with seasoned salt on either side. Add the burgers to the same pan in which you cooked the onions. Sprinkle over Worcestershire sauce. Cook covered over medium high heat for 4 minutes. Flip the patties. Top each burger with a mountain of caramelized onions and 2 slices of cheese. Cover and cook for another 5 minutes until the cheese is melted. Burgers will be pink and medium. Cook for an extra 1-2 minutes for medium-well.
Serve the burger on a toasted brioche roll.
